According to the county on the 1st, about 80 local residents are currently participating in various public forest cultivation projects such as the 'biomass forest product collection project.'
The public forest cultivation project is promoted to foster sustainable and highly public forest resources and to create local jobs.
Since about 78% of the land area, including Jirisan, is forestland, the county views efficient mountain area utilization as a catalyst for regional development and has been actively promoting forest resource cultivation projects since 2011.
This year, the county is spending 1.285 billion KRW on forest cultivation through the Sancheong-gun Forestry Cooperative's agency project.
The public forest cultivation project is classified diversely according to the characteristics of each project.
The 'biomass forest product collection project' involves collecting forest products after forest maintenance and removing vines along major roads to foster healthy forest resources.
The 'forest cultivation patrol' refers to a project that removes forest-damaged trees that interfere with residents' lives in living areas such as roadsides or residential areas.
In addition, there are projects such as the 'forest road manager,' which removes soil and branches from forest roads in advance to manage forest roads and eliminate causes of disasters, as well as 'landslide site prevention' and 'forest pest monitoring.'
The county plans to secure sales revenue by making the collected forest products from the forest cultivation project into raw materials for wood pellets and use this income for forest environment improvement projects. The forest cultivation project also helps prevent forest fires and preemptively reduces disaster risks such as landslides.
Especially this spring, about a 5 km section of roadside from Jeonggok-ri in Sancheong-eup to Morye-ri in Sindeung-myeon and Jeongchuiam was maintained by removing damaged forest trees, supporting the growth of cherry trees and contributing to the creation of a beautiful cherry blossom drive course.
Jeong Oh-geun, head of the Forest and Greenery Division, said, "The satisfaction of residents participating in the forest cultivation project is considerable. It is a source of pride to beautify the area where they live, and it also builds camaraderie among those working together. Many people apply every year, making the competition quite high." He added, "Since the project removes trees that cause damage in living areas such as roadsides and residential areas and cultivates trees that help residents' income, it receives significant support from local residents."
