[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Gang-wook] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 1st that it has designated seven comprehensive educational institutions in the field of construction technology and eight specialized educational institutions for safety, quality, and other areas, following deliberation by the Education and Training Deliberation Committee.

Based on the evaluation considering past educational performance and annual education demand, a total of seven comprehensive educational institutions were selected, including five existing institutions and two new ones. For specialized educational institutions, a total of eight were chosen, comprising four existing institutions and four new ones.

The evaluation of educational institutions was conducted by the Korea Construction Policy Research Institute, the education management organization, which formed an evaluation committee consisting of experts from industry, academia, and research. From December last year to March this year, over three months, the process included public recruitment and briefing sessions for institutions, followed by document reviews and on-site inspections assessing the institutions' soundness, educational facilities and equipment, operational systems, educational performance, satisfaction, and training organization.

Construction technology education is systematically implemented as initial, promotion, and continuing education under Article 20 of the Construction Technology Promotion Act, aiming to enhance the technical capabilities of construction technicians and provide continuous education on safety, quality, and other aspects. This education system also offers opportunities to acquire new construction technologies recently introduced, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), modular construction methods, and automation, while continuously strengthening safety education to reduce construction-related fatalities.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to evaluate the performance of educational institutions annually through the education management organization, including institution operation and educational achievements, and reflect these evaluations in the designation review of educational institutions every three years. Continuous follow-up management of educational institutions will also be implemented.

Furthermore, the ministry aims to improve the construction technology education system by expanding smart construction education that responds to future changes, as well as education to strengthen overall capabilities in overseas projects such as business planning and financial procurement. The goal is to shift from an institution-centered education system to a demand-centered one.

Lee Sang-joo, Director of Technology and Safety Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "We expect that the renewal and new recruitment of educational institutions every three years will induce innovative changes in educational institutions and lead to education centered on construction technicians." He added, "To this end, we plan to supply various educational courses, including smart construction that fits the changing times, to educational institutions and strive to improve the quality of construction technology education."
