Gyeongnam's Only 'Aquarium' Opens in the Marine Tourism City of Sacheon
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Woo Jong-wook] An aquarium exhibiting over 1,400 species of mammals, fish, reptiles, and more, with a capacity of 4,000 tons, will open in Gyeongnam.
Sacheon City announced on the 31st that the ‘Aramaru Aquarium,’ linked with the Sea Cable Car, is scheduled to open on May 1st.
The aquarium has been under construction since January last year on a 7,790㎡ site near the lower station of the Choyang Island Sea Cable Car, with one above-ground floor and two underground floors.
Utilizing the terrain of Choyang Island in a terraced form, the design maximizes the island’s elevation differences and coastline to preserve the island’s unique natural scenery.
Based on architecture harmonizing with the surrounding landscape, the exhibition facilities resemble the marine environment, creating an optimal viewing route and an eco-friendly exhibition environment.
The exhibition features about 400 species of mammals, fish, and reptiles such as hippos, otters, beavers, seals, and crocodiles. Visitors can see rare animals rarely found in Korea, including manatees known as mermaids, Shuvuuia?the descendant of dinosaurs, and giant hippos, as well as over 1,000 species of rare fish up close.
To allow viewing of extinct species and animals that cannot be exhibited, advanced digital technology is applied in the aquarium to provide visitors with a differentiated viewing experience.
All tanks incorporate natural lighting and are designed to closely mimic wild living environments, reducing carbon emissions and blending with the surrounding natural scenery.
The first floor includes a sea tunnel, Sacheon’s sea, deep sea, Byeoljubu-jeon, Ice Age, coral reef forest, and a 3D theater.
The second floor exhibits the world of reptiles, mudflat pavilion, Australia pavilion, bird pavilion, lost city, Africa pavilion, and fish from 34 countries.
The third floor features a beaver dam, a crashed airplane, animal houses, and an otter playground.
