Gijang-gun broke ground in 2015 for the 'Park Tae-joon Memorial Hall' to honor the spirit of the late Park Tae-joon, Honorary Chairman of POSCO, who left a great mark on Korea's economic development, and it will soon open its doors.
On the afternoon of March 30, Oh Gyu-seok, the head of Gijang-gun, and related officials inspected the site of the 'Park Tae-joon Memorial Hall' and prepared for its opening.
Mr. Park Tae-joon was born here in 1927. Located at 154-5 Imrang-ri, Jangan-eup, the Park Tae-joon Memorial Hall sits on a 5,216㎡ site with a building area of 952㎡, with 8.2 billion KRW of county funds invested.
The two-story building includes exhibition rooms for personal belongings, a library, seminar rooms, and storage facilities. Construction has been completed. Gijang-gun is hiring a curator before the opening to organize Mr. Park Tae-joon's belongings and thoroughly prepare for the opening.
Oh Gyu-seok, head of Gijang-gun, said, "The patriotism and integrity of Cheongam Park Tae-joon, represented by 'Steel for the Nation' and 'Rightward March,' can be called the 'Gijang Spirit' of this region."
Oh said, "From the beginning of promoting the construction of the memorial hall, the intention was not only for tourism or memorial purposes but to create an educational space to nurture the second and third Park Tae-joons and a space to communicate the spirit of Park Tae-joon."
He added, "To survive in the era of infinite competition led by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we must cultivate the growing dream trees into great trees like Park Tae-joon," and "It must be made into a cradle of education that teaches and passes on the spirit of patriotism and integrity."
Oh Gyu-seok entered politics at the recommendation of YS (former President Kim Young-sam). Later, YS turned away from him after competing with Park Tae-joon for presidential power. Despite the complicated relationship between his 'political mentor' and 'hometown senior,' Oh insisted on building this memorial hall to honor the great figure of Korea's economic construction.
