[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 31st that it has selected the ‘National April 19th Democratic Cemetery,’ the ‘Sejongno Admiral Yi Sun-sin Statue,’ and ‘Seonyudo Park’ as the Future Heritage of April. Seoul conducted a vote to select the ‘Future Heritage of April’ from March 16 to 21.
The National April 19th Democratic Cemetery is the resting place of 459 victims who dedicated themselves to democracy in Korea during the April 19th Democratic Movement. Established in 1961 shortly after the revolution, this site serves as a living classroom of the April 19th Revolution and is preserved as a sacred place of democratic ideals in Korea as Future Heritage.
The Admiral Yi Sun-sin Statue, located in Gwanghwamun Square, was erected to honor Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545?1598), a military commander of the mid-Joseon period known as Chungmugong (忠武公). This statue was created in April 1968 by sculptor Kim Se-jung to restore and correct the city’s central axis, which had been altered during the Japanese colonial period.
Seonyudo Park is the country’s first environmental regeneration ecological park, utilizing the old water purification facilities on Seonyudo Island, located in the middle of Yanghwa Bridge. It was selected as Future Heritage for its role in helping citizens re-recognize the value of the Han River and raising awareness about the importance of environmental protection as an ecological experience space.
