[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seo Jeong-cheop, Acting Mayor of Seoul, will visit Seoul Medical Center on the morning of the 31st, which serves as the central hub for Seoul's COVID-19 response, to encourage the medical staff working on the front lines and to check the progress of innovation measures.
Seoul Medical Center was designated as an infectious disease-dedicated hospital for COVID-19 in February last year, preparing isolation beds for confirmed patients within the hospital and operating the Taereung Living Treatment Center and KEPCO Living Treatment Center to treat confirmed cases. So far, a total of 6,229 COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized and treated at Seoul Medical Center, accounting for about 20% of confirmed cases in Seoul.
Currently, Seoul Medical Center operates a total of 639 beds, including the main building ward (195 beds), nationally designated inpatient treatment beds (10 beds), Taereung Living Treatment Center (310 beds), and KEPCO Living Treatment Center (124 beds). An average of 400 medical personnel are deployed daily.
Acting Mayor Seo plans to visit the screening clinic set up next to the main gate of Seoul Medical Center to encourage the medical staff working hard on COVID-19 diagnostic testing. He will then visit the comprehensive situation room (7th floor) to receive a briefing on the COVID-19 response status and Seoul Medical Center's innovation measures and check the progress.
Additionally, he will visit the auditorium (4th floor), where COVID-19 vaccination is being administered, to encourage the medical staff responsible for vaccinations. Currently, the first dose of vaccination has been completed for 1,305 frontline workers, including medical staff at Seoul Medical Center, and the second dose vaccination begins on the 31st. He will also tour the construction site of the Emergency Medical Center within Seoul Medical Center. The Emergency Medical Center will serve as the regional emergency medical center for the northeastern area of Seoul, acting as the final treatment institution for severe emergency patients. The center is scheduled to be completed in August, with the current progress rate at 82%.

Acting Mayor Seo said, “Seoul Medical Center has been designated as an infectious disease-dedicated hospital and has taken on the most challenging tasks since the early stages of COVID-19. As the pandemic has prolonged for over a year, the difficulties faced on the ground are likely beyond imagination. I hope that all staff will continue efforts to create a happy workplace centered on the innovation tasks established in December 2019, and Seoul City will spare no support for the development of Seoul Medical Center and the improvement of working conditions for its organizational members.”
