Buttercream Instead of Fresh Cream, Strawberry Jelly Instead of Fresh Strawberries... Recreated as Peacock
"Strengthening Grocery Competitiveness Through Collaboration with Long-Established Stores, Continuing Win-Win with Small Merchants"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Emart announced on the 30th that it will reinterpret Taegukdang's signature menu 'Butter Cake' as Peacock and launch it nationwide through Emart stores and SSG.com on the 31st.
Emart stated that the release of 'Peacock Taegukdang Butter Cake' is part of a collaboration with Taegukdang under the 'Caring Company' agreement signed with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups in December 2020. The 'Caring Company' program, led by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, stands for 'Voluntary Win-Win Company.' Emart was selected as the 25th 'Caring Company' by promising to support the development and sales channels of excellent small business owners' own products, revitalize win-win stores in traditional markets, and provide educational programs to strengthen small business owners' capabilities.
The 'Peacock Taegukdang Butter Cake' weighs 520g and is priced at 14,980 KRW, which is about 30% cheaper than the similar-sized No. 1 size cake sold at Taegukdang.
Taegukdang, operating for 76 years since 1946, is the oldest bakery in Seoul and was selected as a 'Centennial Store' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups in June 2020. The 'Centennial Store' designation is given by the Ministry to stores with over 30 years of operation, considering factors such as the owner's willingness to innovate, product and service differentiation, and business sustainability. Taegukdang is famous for its Butter Cake, Monaka ice cream, red bean bread, and Jeonbyeong (Korean pancakes).
The Butter Cake has been featured in media such as 'Reply 1988,' evoking nostalgia among middle-aged and older generations who enjoyed Butter Cake in the 80s and 90s, while providing fun to younger generations following the newtro trend.
Emart recreated Taegukdang Butter Cake’s buttercream and cake sheet containing walnuts as Peacock products.
Emart said, "We are expanding sales channels by collaborating with Centennial Stores such as Jangchung-dong Wang Jokbal and Uijeongbu Odeng Restaurant to launch Peacock products, while striving to promote traditional eateries in Korea." Peacock’s Jangchung-dong Wang Jokbal, Mini Jokbal, and Chewy Pyeonyuk have shown high annual sales growth rates of 154% last year and 36.3% from January to March this year since their launch in 2019. Peacock Odeng Restaurant’s Budae Jjigae meal kit, launched in April last year, has sold 260,000 units to date and ranks first in sales among Emart meal kits.
