Seven Eleven Strengthens Eco-Friendly Product Lineup ... No-Label Bottled Water Sales Up 80%
Bio PET Packaging 'Sandwich & Salad' Launched... Introduction of Eco-Friendly Bags
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Since announcing its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management initiative earlier this year, Seven Eleven is now actively strengthening its lineup of eco-friendly products.
On the 29th, Seven Eleven introduced new meal sets from the One Meal Lab that combine sandwiches and salads, such as 'Ham Cheese Sandwich & Chicken Salad' and 'Crab Stick Sandwich & Chicken Breast Salad,' capitalizing on the popular "Bbab" (bread instead of rice) culture that emerged during the COVID-19 stay-at-home trend. The product containers have been changed from conventional plastic PET to bio PET.
Bio PET is an eco-friendly PET container made with 30% sugarcane extract, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and is 100% recyclable. Prior to this, Seven Eleven had launched 'Assorted Sushi' using biodegradable PLA (polylactide) containers and 'Strawless Cup Coffee' to reduce plastic straw usage.
As the consumer base seeking value-driven consumption grows, sales of these eco-friendly products have also been strong. The strawless cup coffee, now in its second month since launch, ranks 8th in sales among all cup coffees at Seven Eleven this month. Sales of the assorted sushi have increased by double digits compared to its launch at the end of last year. The label-free bottled water 'Isis (2L*6-pack),' introduced on the 4th of this month, saw sales surge by 80% compared to the same period last month after switching to a label-free design.
Accordingly, Seven Eleven is preparing to launch a wider variety of eco-friendly products.
First, it plans to introduce 100% biodegradable eco-friendly bags next month. The design drafts and production preparations have already been completed, and the related certification process is underway. Initially, these bags will be selectively operated at individual franchise stores, but after discussions with store owners, the company aims to replace existing plastic bags nationwide as early as June.
Private brand bottled water will also be relaunched as label-free water alongside a brand renewal. Production schedules and final designs are currently being coordinated. The use of bio PET will be further expanded, and salad products using this material will be released sequentially.
Lee Hyun-ho, Head of Product Operations at Seven Eleven, stated, "We will practice ESG management in various ways to become a company that empathizes and coexists with our society."
