Im Seong-hyun, Chief of the Gwangju Regional Veterans Affairs Office, visited and paid tribute to the bust of the late Sergeant Seo Jeong-woo on the 26th in observance of West Sea Defense Day.
According to the Gwangju Veterans Affairs Office on the 28th, the late Sergeant Seo Jeong-woo died in the Yeonpyeong Island shelling provocation, one of the three major West Sea defense incidents. He was an alumnus of Munseong Middle School in Gwangju, where a bust has been erected in his honor.
Chief Im of the Gwangju Veterans Affairs Office, along with Kim Byeong-nae, Mayor of Nam-gu District, Baek Hyeong-wan, Principal of Munseong Middle School, and heads of seven veterans organizations attended the ceremony to lay flowers and observe a moment of silence.
Sergeant Seo, on November 23, 2010, during the North Korean shelling provocation of Yeonpyeong Island, was waiting at the Yeonpyeong Island pier to board a boat for his leave when the shelling began. He returned to his unit and was killed by shrapnel from enemy shells during his return.
