Seoul City to Establish 25 Local Environmental Education Centers Across All Districts by 2025
New Regional Environmental Education Centers Designated in 4 Districts: Guro, Seodaemun, Eunpyeong, and Jung-gu... Total of 9 Centers Operating
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] To actively respond to environmental issues such as the climate crisis, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will establish local environmental education centers throughout all 25 autonomous districts of Seoul by 2025.
On the 29th, Seoul announced that it had designated four existing basic environmental education organizations located in Guro, Seodaemun, Eunpyeong, and Jung districts as ‘Autonomous District Local Environmental Education Centers.’ As of March, a total of nine local environmental education centers are operating in Seoul. The newly designated centers this year are Gungdong Youth Culture House in Guro-gu, Seodaemun Youth Center in Seodaemun-gu, Mulpure Ecological Education Center in Eunpyeong-gu, and the Environmental Education Center in Jung-gu.
The local environmental education centers will serve as hubs to revitalize environmental education within the autonomous districts, playing a crucial role in building regional networks that connect local environmental education organizations and various environmental education infrastructures.
The four newly designated local environmental education centers will begin full-scale activities from April, including developing and operating environmental education programs that reflect local environmental issues and training environmental education professionals. Each center possesses specialized capabilities, which are expected to contribute to the revitalization of environmental education in their respective regions.
Seoul plans to designate about five new local environmental education centers annually, aiming to have centers in all 25 districts by 2025. Additionally, Seoul is promoting the establishment of a metropolitan environmental education center to activate environmental education. In the future, environmental education will be expanded throughout Seoul with the metropolitan and local (basic) environmental education centers as the core.
