'Joseon Exorcist' Actors and PD Apologize for "Ignorance of Historical Distortion" (Summary)
Actors Kam Woo-sung, Jang Dong-yoon, Park Sung-hoon, Lee Yoo-bi "Reflect on Not Thinking Deeply"
PD Shin Kyung-soo "All Stemmed from Directorial Shortcomings... Apologize"
The cast of the SBS drama 'Joseon Exorcist,' which was canceled after just two episodes due to historical distortion, have collectively issued apologies. As criticism of the work intensified, they came forward one after another. The actors include Gam Woo-sung, Jang Dong-yoon, Park Sung-hoon, and Lee Yoo-bi.
Gam Woo-sung, who played King Taejong in 'Joseon Exorcist,' stated on the 27th, "I apologize for causing concern to the viewers and the public." He explained, "As an actor who has a significant influence on the public, I regret not having considered the matter more deeply and causing disappointment. Even though it is a fictional story, as an actor leading the drama through real historical figures, I failed to recognize the possibility that it could be perceived as historical distortion by the viewers."
Jang Dong-yoon, who portrayed Prince Chungnyeong, also admitted, "I did not fully realize that this work would become such a problem." He said, "It was because I was ignorant and complacent. I only viewed the work from the perspective of an actor performing a creative piece. Overlooking the parts that should have been critically examined socially was a grave mistake."
Park Sung-hoon, who played Prince Yangnyeong, released a handwritten apology expressing a strong sense of responsibility as a cast member. He said, "I failed to properly distinguish between creativity and distortion. I foolishly and inadequately thought that my duty as an actor was simply to do my best with the given character. I have come to realize belatedly how important historical awareness and social responsibility are for actors."
Lee Yoo-bi, who played Eori, the concubine of Prince Yangnyeong, also issued an apology, stating, "I was ignorant about the historical distortion and did not think deeply enough, for which I reflect deeply."
Director Shin Kyung-soo also took full responsibility. In a statement, he said, "As the director responsible for all decisions and final choices regarding the recent issues, I would like to apologize." He added, "I did not direct with a biased historical consciousness or any specific intention. The problematic scenes all stemmed from my lack of directing skills. I take full responsibility for all decisions and choices related to the drama's content."

'Joseon Exorcist' is a Korean-style exorcism fantasy drama depicting the fierce battle of those protecting the country and its people from evil spirits that seek to devour Joseon by exploiting human desires. Amid criticism that the Chinese-style props and costumes, as well as the settings of real historical figures such as King Taejong, Prince Yangnyeong, and Prince Chungnyeong, were far from actual history, the drama was canceled on the 26th.
