Rising Tensions on the Korean Peninsula... Will North Korea Launch Additional Provocations?
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Following North Korea's acknowledgment of ballistic missile launches, tensions surrounding the Korean Peninsula are escalating as Pyongyang confronts U.S. President Biden, labeling him a "blatant provocateur." Experts predict a very high likelihood of further provocations by North Korea in the future.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, on the 27th, Ri Pyong-chol, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and Vice Chairman of the Party Central Military Commission, condemned President Biden's statement on "violation of UN resolutions" as a "blatant infringement on the country's right to self-defense and a provocation."
Ri, who led the missile launch test on the 25th alongside officials from the Party's Munitions Industry Department and the Defense Science Research sector, did so in the absence of Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea.
Earlier, President Biden pointed out in a press conference that North Korea's ballistic missile launches constitute a "violation of UN Security Council resolutions," and stated, "If North Korea seeks to escalate tensions, the U.S. will respond accordingly." In response, Vice Chairman Ri retorted, "I express strong concern over the openly displayed extreme hostility toward North Korea."
With North Korea countering President Biden's tough message as a "blatant infringement on self-defense rights," military tensions around the Korean Peninsula appear to be intensifying. Professor Lim Eul-chul of Gyeongnam National University emphasized, "Attention should be paid to the significance of Vice Chairman Ri, the top figure in defense and munitions sectors, issuing a direct warning," adding, "This is a clear indication of the Party's intention to continue developing not only strategic weapon systems but also new tactical weapon systems according to the national defense strengthening plan, despite U.S. opposition."
The possibility of additional missile provocations has also increased. Shin Beom-chul, Director of the Foreign and Security Policy Center at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade, stated, "The ballistic weight of the new short-range missile being 2.5 tons means that the development of multiple warheads is also possible," and added, "There may be a need to continue testing, and additional provocations are expected to continue."

Amid rising tensions and increasingly strained inter-Korean relations, there are calls for bold actions by President Moon Jae-in to ease the situation. Professor Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies said, "We cannot rely solely on the U.S.; we need to send messages to the North," and stressed, "It is necessary for President Moon to deliver a personal letter to General Secretary Kim, stating that 'the military escalation on the Korean Peninsula is undesirable.'"
