According to AFP and other sources on the 26th, Han Lei, Myanmar's representative at Miss Grand International held in Bangkok, Thailand, appealed in an interview the day before, "Many people in Myanmar are being shot and killed by the military. Please save our people."
Lei stated, "I participated in the beauty pageant as Myanmar's representative to deliver a message to the international community to stop war and violence." Lei, a psychology student at Yangon University, said, "Yangon University students have been detained by the military. There is no freedom in Myanmar. Human rights are being violated."
She continued, "In a democracy, the right to speak is important. Our voices must be heard. The people of Myanmar have taken to the streets to fight for democracy," she emphasized.
On the 24th, during the national costume contest, she appeared wearing a golden outfit. Regarding the meaning of the costume, Lei explained, "It was made to represent 'peace,' which is most needed in the current Myanmar situation."
The Miss Grand International held that day is an international beauty pageant with the theme of 'peace and non-violence,' with representatives from 63 countries participating this year.
