Blooming 19 Days Earlier Than Average and 3 Days Earlier Than Last Year
Influenced by Higher Temperatures and More Sunshine in February and March

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced on the 25th that this year's cherry blossom blooming in Seoul was 3 days earlier than last year and 17 days earlier than the average date (April 10).
Since cherry blossom observations began in Seoul in 1922, this year recorded the earliest blooming date. The second earliest year was March 27, 2020, and the third was March 28, 2014.
The early blooming compared to the average is due to higher average temperatures and longer sunshine duration in February and March than usual.
The average temperature in Seoul in February was 2.7°C, which is 2.3°C higher than the average (0.4°C), and in March it was 8.3°C, 3.2°C higher than the average (5.1°C). The sunshine duration was also longer, with 181.0 hours in February compared to the average of 163.3 hours, and 158.5 hours in March compared to the average of 138.3 hours.
The cherry blossom blooming in Seoul is based on the king cherry tree at the Seoul Meteorological Observatory in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The blooming observation criterion is when three or more flowers are fully open on any one branch of a tree.

Since 2000, the Korea Meteorological Administration has designated Yeouido Yunjungno as a cherry blossom cluster site and observes three trees (management numbers 118-120) in front of Gate 6 of the National Assembly. However, the observation trees at Yeouido Yunjungno, a representative cherry blossom spot in Seoul, have not yet bloomed.
