LF Introduces Eco-Friendly Packaging System... Strengthening 'ESG Management' in Earnest
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] LF announced on the 25th that it will actively strengthen its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management by introducing the industry's first eco-friendly packaging system to drastically reduce packaging waste.
Starting in July, LF will introduce the eco-friendly packaging system called 'CartonLab' for the production of packaging boxes across all its brands, including its official online shopping mall, LF Mall. CartonLab is an eco-friendly packaging system developed by the Italian company 'CMC SRL' and adopted by numerous distribution and consumer goods companies in the United States, Europe, and other regions.
CartonLab automates the entire product packaging process and significantly reduces the amount of packaging waste generated. When a product is placed into the input slot, a box is created according to the product's size, and all processes from packaging to attaching the shipping label are automatically carried out. Instead of using standardized boxes, thousands of product types such as wallets, bags, and coats are scanned, and boxes are custom-made to fit the characteristics and size of each product. This process drastically reduces the amount of boxes and OPP tape used for packaging boxes.
In particular, by establishing this eco-friendly packaging system, LF can completely eliminate the use of cushioning materials such as Styrofoam and airbags, which were inevitably used to fill empty spaces in standardized boxes during the packaging process. This fundamentally blocks the misuse of packaging cushioning materials, which have recently emerged as a major cause of environmental pollution.
LF estimates that after introducing the CartonLab eco-friendly packaging system, it will achieve an annual reduction of about 25% (410 tons) in packaging boxes and about 90% (0.2 tons) in OPP tape. Additionally, the use of vinyl (approximately 66 tons annually), which was inevitably used for packaging small-volume products such as knits and T-shirts, will no longer be necessary.
Choi Yong, Head of LF Logistics Innovation Office, said, “By adopting a verified eco-friendly packaging solution actively used by global distribution companies, we expect to drastically reduce the amount of packaging waste generated. LF plans to continuously research logistics innovation measures to minimize environmentally harmful factors arising from the normalization of online consumption and to practice environmental values.”
Prior to this, LF has been practicing eco-friendly management through material innovation to contribute to sustainable natural environment creation. In 2019, it launched the vegan beauty brand 'Atte' and introduced eco-friendly cosmetics certified by the French vegan certification organization ‘EVE’. Through various brands such as Hazzys, Daks, At Corner, and Jill Stuart New York, LF has significantly expanded product lines using eco-friendly materials such as recycled nylon yarn and recycled leather.

Since 2015, LF has been the first in the industry to establish a ‘Performance Compensation Committee’ composed of a majority of outside directors to objectively determine the performance bonuses of key executives, including the CEO, and to review the appropriateness of the next year’s business goals. LF, which has developed a systemic foundation for transparent and responsible management, plans to use the introduction of the eco-friendly packaging system as an opportunity to fundamentally reorganize its core corporate values around ESG management.
