Torch Relay Begins in Fukushima on the 25th
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] The number of new daily COVID-19 cases in Japan approached 2,000 on the day before the Tokyo Summer Olympics torch relay, which was delayed by one year due to COVID-19.
According to Japan's NHK broadcast on the 24th, as of 6:30 PM, the total number of new COVID-19 cases nationwide was counted at 1,917. This is the first time in about a month and a half since June 6 (2,279 cases) that Japan's daily new COVID-19 cases have neared the 2,000 mark.
Japan's new case numbers had dropped to the 800 range on the 22nd, when the state of emergency was lifted in four metropolitan areas, but after surpassing 1,500 cases the previous day, the number again approached 2,000 on this day.

Meanwhile, the Tokyo Olympics torch relay will begin on the 25th in Fukushima (福島) Prefecture. The opening ceremony at the starting point will be held without general spectators. The torch, departing from Fukushima Prefecture on the 25th, will be carried by about 10,000 runners over 121 days, touring 47 prefectures.
