Controversy Over Historical Distortion in 'Joseon Exorcist'... OTT Platforms Also Affected
KT Also Takes Advertising Suspension Measures
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The SBS drama "Joseon Exorcist" has become embroiled in controversy over historical distortion, and the backlash is now affecting the online video streaming service (OTT) industry broadcasting the show.
As of the 24th, "Joseon Exorcist" is being simulcast on Coupang Play and Wavve. Currently, episodes 1 and 2 have been uploaded on both Coupang Play and Wavve. However, due to contractual issues, it is unlikely that these companies will immediately halt the broadcast. Wavve stated, "As a distribution platform, we cannot arbitrarily block content that is currently airing," adding, "We will actively cooperate if there is a separate request from the broadcaster."
Meanwhile, KT has also suspended advertising placement for "Joseon Exorcist." KT announced on its official Instagram, "We have acknowledged the issues surrounding the problematic program and have promptly taken action to stop advertising." They added, "We ask for your understanding as we were unable to recognize these issues in advance due to simple ad scheduling."
"Joseon Exorcist" attracted attention by presenting a creature genre rarely seen on terrestrial TV alongside a historical drama. However, from the first episode, controversies over historical distortion and Chinese-style elements intensified, leading companies involved in production support or sponsorship to cancel their advertisements one after another.

In particular, a scene where Prince Chungnyeong serves mooncakes, Chinese-style dumplings, and century eggs (fermented duck eggs) to an exorcist priest (Dalcy Packet) from the Western Regions at a Joseon-era gisaeng house became problematic. There were also criticisms that the gisaeng house itself had Chinese-style interior decor.
