LG Electronics Accelerates Leadership in 6G Technology... Signs MOU with Keysight and KAIST
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] LG Electronics is teaming up with Keysight and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) to lead the next-generation mobile communication technology, 6G.
According to LG Electronics, on the 23rd, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) ceremony was held at LG Electronics Seocho R&D Campus in Yangjae-dong, Seoul. This agreement concerns the development of core terahertz (THz) source technology, which is the key frequency for 6G mobile communication, and the establishment of a verification system, aiming to secure leadership in the standardization and commercialization stages of 6G mobile communication in the future.
The three participating organizations will progressively carry out ▲joint development of source technology and establishment of test infrastructure related to terahertz ▲advancement of measurement equipment ▲research on radio wave environments from this year through 2024. Keysight, a global wireless communication test and measurement equipment manufacturer, is currently supplying LG Electronics with 6G terahertz commercial test equipment.
6G mobile communication is expected to begin standardization discussions around 2025 and commercialize by 2029. It is characterized by much faster wireless transmission speeds, low latency, and highly reliable communication support compared to 5G. It is regarded as a means to enable the All-Intelligence Internet of Everything (AIoE), where people, objects, and spaces are organically connected.
Previously, LG Electronics signed an MOU with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science and KAIST in August last year, aiming to secure core source technology for 6G. In January 2019, LG Electronics partnered with KAIST to establish the ‘LG-KAIST 6G Research Center.’
