Orion Jeju Yongamsu Selected as 'Best Water' by Korea's Leading Water Sommelier
6 Korean National Team Water Sommeliers Participate in Judging
Refreshing and Smooth Taste Despite High Hardness of Hard Water
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Orion announced on the 22nd that ‘Dr. You Jeju Lava Water’ received the highest score among 74 products at the ‘5th Bottled Water Tasting Contest 2021’ conducted by the Korea International Sommelier Association in celebration of ‘World Water Day.’
The event, held on the 13th at Kyung Hee University’s College of Hotel and Tourism Management, was attended by Ko Jae-yoon, president of the Korea International Sommelier Association, as well as Korea’s national water sommeliers Kang Ji-won (Induk University lecturer), Kim Ha-neul (The Better Water Co., Ltd.), Lee Han-seo (Water Inside), Park Chae-won (Kyung Hee University PhD), and Kwon Soon-min. The judging was conducted by six of the country’s most authoritative water sommeliers through a blind tasting, with labels covered by black cloth, of 74 types of domestic and international bottled waters, including general bottled water, deep ocean water, brackish groundwater, carbonated water, and water purifier water sold in department stores, large supermarkets, and convenience stores. As a result of the tasting contest, Dr. You Jeju Lava Water scored 89.75 points, receiving the highest score among them.
Dr. You Jeju Lava Water is a hard water product with a hardness of 200 mg/L, calculated by calcium and magnesium content. The reason for its high hardness is that it uses mineral-rich lava seawater as the source water. According to the product’s nutritional information, the 2L bottle contains 130 mg of calcium, 44 mg of potassium, and 18 mg of magnesium. The TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), which refers to minerals dissolved in the water, also exceeds 300 mg/L. To cater to consumers with Westernized eating habits, the pH is alkalized to 8.1, which is another characteristic. The product is sold in three sizes: 330 mL, 530 mL, and 2L.
The Korea International Sommelier Association holds the ‘Bottled Water Tasting Contest’ every year ahead of March 22, ‘World Water Day,’ to introduce bottled water suited to Korean tastes. World Water Day was first proposed at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has been observed annually on March 22 since 1993 to raise awareness of the importance of water resources and water.

We will pioneer a new category of hard water in the domestic market, which mainly consists of soft water, and expand it globally.”
