Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "No Casualties Among Our Citizens in Japan's Tohoku 7.2 Earthquake"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the afternoon of the 20th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that there were no casualties among our nationals in relation to the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that occurred in the Tohoku region of Japan.
At 6:09 PM that day, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck 74 km east of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency immediately issued a tsunami advisory, which was lifted at 7:30 PM.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the damage status through the Korean community and student contact network at the Consulate General in Sendai, the jurisdictional mission, and stated that, so far, there have been no casualties among our nationals.
However, it is predicted that there will be some damage to buildings and property due to the strong shaking caused by the earthquake.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "The Ministry headquarters and the Consulate General in Sendai immediately activated a response team upon the earthquake occurrence, are maintaining close contact with the Korean community, continuously assessing the damage situation, and will provide necessary consular assistance." They also added, "We have established a necessary cooperation system including information sharing with other missions in Japan, excluding the Consulate General in Sendai."
