KMA and NOAA Discuss Current Issues Including Climate Crisis Response Measures
Introduction to Korea Meteorological Administration Plans Including Future Climate Change Projections
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) held a video conference with the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) to discuss key issues such as disaster response systems and climate crisis countermeasures.
This meeting was conducted in the form of a summit between the heads of the meteorological agencies of both countries, following the '7th Korea-U.S. Meteorological Cooperation Meeting' held last December.
They exchanged opinions on the U.S. National Weather Service's disaster response system in the event of meteorological disasters, cooperation in climate change monitoring activities, climate crisis response measures, and improvements in long-term forecasting services.
Regarding the disaster response system, the U.S. National Weather Service shared its experience with Impact-based Decision Support Services (IDSS) and explored cooperation plans.
Both meteorological agencies agreed on the importance of meteorological and climate services for a climate-resilient society, especially as the U.S. is considering its 2050 carbon neutrality pledge and the introduction of a carbon border tax.
KMA Administrator Park Kwang-seok introduced Korea's plans, including future climate change projections up to 2050 and extreme climate information provision by 2100 under low-carbon and high-carbon scenarios. They also discussed the 2022 joint atmospheric quality observation plan over the West Sea to strengthen cooperation in climate change monitoring activities.
