Boseong-gun Protects 80 Years of Clean Livestock Reputation with Mass Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccination
Mass Vaccination Campaign for One Month Until the 16th of Next Month
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Cheon-seok] Boseong County announced on the 15th that it will conduct the ‘First Half of the Year Foot-and-Mouth Disease Mass Vaccination’ for one month until the 16th of next month.
During this mass vaccination period, about 60,000 cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, pigs, goats, deer), including approximately 25,000 Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) and dairy cows, will receive the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine.
Large-scale farms will proceed with self-vaccination, where livestock owners vaccinate their own animals, while six public veterinarians will be deployed to support vaccination for small-scale farms where self-vaccination is difficult.
Boseong County has posted banners announcing the mass vaccination at major locations within the county to effectively promote the foot-and-mouth disease mass vaccination while complying with COVID-19 social distancing and other quarantine rules. Additionally, township and town offices are promoting active participation in the mass vaccination through daily village broadcasts.
Moreover, livestock organizations such as the Livestock Cooperative and the Hanwoo Association are encouraging member farms to participate in the mass vaccination through SNS and text messages, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining a foot-and-mouth disease-free area.
Boseong County has maintained a clean area free of foot-and-mouth disease since 1934 without a single occurrence, conducting occasional vaccinations monthly and mass vaccinations twice a year in the first and second halves of the year.
A Boseong County official stated, “We will devote all our efforts to preventive vaccination and barrier quarantine to establish an ironclad quarantine system that leaves no room for disaster-type livestock infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever to take hold in Boseong County.” He added, “We ask livestock farmers to thoroughly carry out foot-and-mouth disease vaccinations and disinfect farms and livestock barns to maintain the reputation of a livestock infectious disease-free area.”
