BTS Completes Korea's First Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards
Performance Connecting the US Grammy Awards and Downtown Seoul
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The group BTS set a new milestone by performing solo at the United States' most prestigious music awards, the GRAMMY AWARDS.
On the 15th (Korean time), BTS performed their digital single "Dynamite," released last August, at the 63rd GRAMMY AWARDS. They created a symbolic moment by becoming the first Korean pop artists to be nominated for a GRAMMY and then performing a solo stage. BTS shone at the 2021 GRAMMY AWARDS alongside global musicians who performed at the ceremony, including Cardi B, DaBaby, Harry Styles, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, and Taylor Swift.
Starting their special performance in front of the iconic giant gramophone (the first disc phonograph) symbolizing the GRAMMY AWARDS, BTS moved from inside the gramophone’s horn to the GRAMMY AWARDS photo wall, and then to the heart of downtown Seoul, completing a performance that connected the GRAMMY AWARDS in Seoul and Los Angeles.
In particular, behind BTS, who used a grand-scale helipad as their stage, the night view of Seoul, including the Han River, was broadcast worldwide, showcasing the beauty of Korea.
Having participated in the GRAMMY AWARDS for three consecutive years, BTS previously appeared as presenters at the 61st ceremony in 2019 and performed a joint stage with rapper Lil Nas X at the 62nd ceremony last year. This year, as nominees and solo performers, they demonstrated their presence in the global mainstream music market. With this, BTS made history as the first Korean pop artists to perform solo stages at all three major U.S. music awards: the Billboard Music Awards, the American Music Awards, and the GRAMMY AWARDS.
