'2021 Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Awards', Applications Open Until April 15
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] The ‘2021 Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Awards’ is accepting nominations for ‘Academic Promotion Award’ and ‘Fellowship’ candidates among domestic women scientists from the 15th until April 15th.
The ‘2021 Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Awards’ is the most prestigious award for women scientists in Korea, sponsored by L'Or?al Korea and the UNESCO Korean Commission, and organized by the Women in Life Science and Technology Forum.
Marking its 20th anniversary this year, the ‘Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Awards’ has continuously contributed to the advancement of women in science since 2002, producing a total of 79 awardees (including multiple-time winners) up to last year.
The call for candidates for the ‘2021 Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Awards’ is divided into two categories: ‘Academic Promotion Award’ and ‘Fellowship’. The ‘Academic Promotion Award’ is given to domestic women scientists who have demonstrated active academic activities and outstanding research achievements. Candidates are women scientists who have potential to contribute to the international scientific community or have contributed to enhancing the role and status of women scientists.
The ‘Fellowship’ is targeted at early-career women scientists under the age of 45 (born after November 1, 1976), who are either doctoral students or within five years of obtaining their PhD, and who have achieved excellent research results in Korea. The fields of application include Life Sciences (Life Sciences, Medicine) and Natural Sciences (Chemistry/Environment, Mathematics/Statistics, Physics/Astronomy/Earth Sciences).
Applicants should submit the application form, recommendation letters, and supporting documents via email by 5 p.m. on April 15th. Detailed application guidelines and forms for the application and recommendation letters can be found on the Women in Life Science and Technology Forum website under announcements.
The final award ceremony for the ‘2021 Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Awards’ is scheduled to take place in June. One recipient of the ‘Academic Promotion Award’ will receive a plaque and a prize of 20 million KRW, while four recipients of the ‘Fellowship’ will each receive a plaque and a prize of 5 million KRW.

Meanwhile, the ‘L'Or?al-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards’ is a globally prestigious science award given annually to women scientists worldwide who have achieved outstanding research accomplishments in the scientific field. To date, it has produced five Nobel Prize laureates. In last year’s ‘2020 L'Or?al-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards’, Professor Mikyung Shin of Sungkyunkwan University, who won the Fellowship category of the ‘2018 Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Awards’, was honored with the International Rising Talent Award.
