[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Three universities within the jurisdiction of a basic local government visited the district mayor. A certain kind of ‘win-win cooperation’ has begun, where the district office and universities unite closely to see if there is anything the universities can do for the local community, or if the district office can do anything for university students.

This is known to be the first case in Korea where all multiple universities located under one autonomous district come together for a cooperative project with the same purpose. Both 4-year universities and junior colleges chose to participate without discrimination. So, what did they unite for?

Dong-Eui University (President Han Su-hwan), Dong-Eui Science University (President Kim Young-do), and Busan Women’s University (President Jung Young-woo) are universities located in Busanjin-gu, Busan.

The three universities signed a ‘Business Agreement for the Mutual Development of the Local Community and Universities’ with Busanjin-gu (District Mayor Seo Eun-sook) on March 11 at the Busanjin-gu Office’s Autonomous Cooperation Office.

This agreement was prepared to establish a cooperative system between local governments and universities and to promote the mutual development of local industry, society, and universities.

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of the universities, including the presidents, directors of industry-academic cooperation foundations, and LINC+ project directors, as well as Seo Eun-sook, the mayor of Busanjin-gu.

According to the agreement, the universities and Busanjin-gu will cooperate as ‘one team’ in △ business cooperation to activate employment and start-ups for local youth and enrolled and graduated students of participating universities △ development and participation in mutual programs for the mutual development of the local community and universities △ provision of mutual infrastructure, technical information, and research data for the mutual development of the local community and universities △ mutual understanding and information exchange for the mutual development of the local community and universities.

Han Su-hwan, president of Dong-Eui University, said, “The crisis of local universities directly leads to the crisis of the local community,” adding, “If a foundation for youth is established through various supports in Busanjin-gu, the center of Busan, a virtuous cycle structure will be created where talented people flock to local universities.”

Kim Young-do, president of Dong-Eui Science University, said, “Rather than individual universities and local governments cooperating separately, we plan to create a successful experience of mutual development in the local community by cooperating as ‘one team’ on programs and projects.”

The three universities and Busanjin-gu plan to form a working-level council in March to discover projects and programs in which youth can participate locally and aim to achieve visible results of the agreement within the year.
