[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) emphasized that safety is the core of nuclear expansion on the 10th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in Japan.
On the 10th (local time), according to Xinhua News Agency, Director General Rafael Grossi stated in a statement that since the accident, "there have been concrete improvements in safety at nuclear-related facilities along with the emergence of a continuous and strong global safety culture."
He particularly noted that just months after the accident, member states supported the comprehensive action plan developed by the IAEA to strengthen the global nuclear safety system.
He explained, "Today, virtually all member states with nuclear power plants have completed stress tests, and many countries are utilizing the IAEA's expert peer-review missions."

He added, "The core of nuclear expansion, which is a commitment to climate stability and economic and social prosperity, is safety," and said that the lesson from the Fukushima nuclear accident is that regulatory authorities must be strong, independent, and adequately resourced.
