Apple to Open 'Europe's Largest' Semiconductor Research Center in Munich, Germany
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Apple will open a mobile semiconductor and software research and development (R&D) center in Munich, Germany, in the second half of next year.
On the 10th (local time), according to CNBC and TechCrunch, Apple announced that it will open a semiconductor research lab called the "Europe Silicon Design Center" in Karlstrasse, the center of Munich, Germany.
This research center, covering an area of 30,000 square meters, will be the largest R&D center in Europe for mobile semiconductors and software, developing 5G, next-generation wireless technologies, and modems for Apple products.
Apple plans to invest $1.2 billion in building this research center and in R&D expenses over the next three years.
More than half of Apple's battery-related engineers work in Germany. Currently, there are about 4,000 Apple employees in Germany, with approximately 1,500 engineers working in Munich, where Apple has seven offices.
Apple stated that it works with German partners such as Delo, Infineon, and Varta, and has invested $17.8 billion in 700 German companies over the past five years.

CNBC reported that Munich, one of Europe's top technology hubs, is home to BMW and Audi, making it an easy place for Apple to secure the technical talent needed for electric vehicle development.
