Hyundai Motor's 'Staria' Unveiled for the First Time: "Experience Future Mobility" (Comprehensive)
Customized Personal Mobility Vehicle (PBV) Concept Developed as Future Food Source
Beyond Simple Transportation, Usable as Work and Rest Space
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled its first MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) that offers a new mobility experience.
Hyundai Motor confirmed the name of its premium MPV model as ‘STARIA’ and revealed teaser images for the first time worldwide on the 11th.
‘STARIA’ Resembling Future PBV Vehicles
STARIA is a compound word combining ‘STAR,’ meaning star, and ‘RIA,’ meaning wave, inspired by the appearance of a spaceship floating among stars, which led to the choice of the name.
Hyundai Motor stated that STARIA was developed with the concept of an innovative and futuristic MPV. It explained that the vehicle offers a spatial experience most similar to the customized mobility (PBV) that Hyundai is currently developing as a future growth engine.
PBV is a new concept shared mobility platform that goes beyond simple transportation, serving as a workspace and relaxation area while transporting passengers to their destinations. Hyundai Motor Group presented PBV as one of the three major future smart mobility solutions at CES 2020 held in Las Vegas, USA, early last year.
According to Hyundai Motor, the global PBV market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 33%, reaching 1.3 million units by 2025. The company expects STARIA to play a significant role in capturing the global PBV market. Hyundai plans to invest 60.1 trillion KRW by 2025 to secure future business capabilities in PBV, urban air mobility (UAM), autonomous driving, and hydrogen businesses.
Voluminous Exterior and Interior Design Maximizing Openness
The teaser images released this time feature the premium ‘STARIA Lounge’ 7-seater model. It is characterized by a voluminous exterior and an interior design that maximizes spacious openness.
The vehicle maximizes spatial perception with a high roof height, long width, and length, while providing interior openness through a low beltline and innovative design, offering customers a new mobility experience, the company emphasized.
The front features a large and wide radiator grille, thin and long daytime running lights (DRL) stretching across the body, and low-positioned headlamps, creating a high-tech image.
The smooth curves extending from the front to the rear of the vehicle evoke a spaceship, and the pixel-type rear combination lamps add a touch of luxury.
The interior space, inspired by the lounge of a cruise ship, is characterized by luxury and spaciousness. Including the driver and front passenger seats, STARIA’s interior applies an ‘Inside-Out’ design that maximizes passenger convenience and usability with simplicity and openness.
Lee Sang-yeop, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Design, said, "STARIA is the first MPV that opens a new era of mobility," adding, "Through differentiated design, it will provide customers with new experiences and value."
