[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A civic group has requested a prosecution investigation, stating that the possibility of illegal speculation cannot be ruled out regarding the controversy over Yang Yi-won-yeong, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, whose mother purchased land near Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, a planned site for the 3rd New Town.
The Action Alliance for Establishing the Rule of Law (Beopse-ryeon) held a press conference on the 11th in front of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul, and announced, "We are requesting an investigation into whether Yang Yi's mother violated the Real Name Real Estate Act, the Real Name Financial Transactions Act, and whether she is an accomplice in violating the Special Act on Public Housing in relation to her purchase of land in Gahak-dong, Gwangmyeong."
Beopse-ryeon stated, "If the land purchased by Yang Yi's mother is effectively Yang Yi's real estate held under a borrowed name, it would violate the Real Name Real Estate Act, and depending on the source of funds, it could also violate the Real Name Financial Transactions Act. Although the mother claims she purchased the land upon recommendations from acquaintances, if she conspired or abetted the act of 'using information learned during official duties for purposes other than intended or providing or leaking it to others' for illegal speculation, she cannot be excluded from being an accomplice in violating the Special Act on Public Housing," they argued.
They continued, "If high-ranking officials such as politicians illegally obtain development information by abusing their positions, and their families or relatives, who effectively form an economic community, engage in illegal speculation to amass enormous wealth and receive exoneration by simply claiming ignorance when caught, this betrays the majority of citizens who work honestly with sweat and tramples on fairness and justice in our society."
Beopse-ryeon also said, "Despite the need to focus on illegal speculation by the elite and conduct thorough investigations, excluding all top expert prosecutors and allowing only police loyal to the regime to conduct the investigation can only be seen as a guideline to investigate only minor offenders to avoid damage to the regime. We urge the formation of a large-scale prosecution-led investigation team to conduct the investigation even now, and if this is impossible due to the adjustment of investigative authority between the prosecution and police, we call for an investigation through a large-scale special prosecutor."

Earlier, it was revealed in 2019 that Yang Yi's mother purchased 66㎡ of land near Gwangmyeong, a planned site for the 3rd New Town, in the form of shared ownership, sparking controversy. In response, Yang Yi issued a statement on the 9th, saying, "I was unaware that my mother owned forest land nearby until the recent LH incident occurred. We have decided to dispose of the forest land and other real estate she owns. I apologize to the citizens who are angry about the LH incident."
