Selection of DJ Center 2nd Exhibition Hall Construction as a Feasibility Study Subject by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 10th that the construction project of the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center Exhibition Hall 2 was recently selected as a feasibility study target project for 2021 at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Task Selection Committee review.
Earlier, Gwangju City submitted the construction plan for the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center Exhibition Hall 2 to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in January in accordance with relevant regulations, and after internal review and the Task Selection Committee’s deliberation, it was decided as a feasibility study target project.
Accordingly, Gwangju City plans to sign a contract next month with the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration (KRILA), a specialized feasibility study institution, and commence the investigation.
Following the successful completion of the feasibility study, the design will be completed by next year, and the construction is scheduled to be finished in 2023.
The Kim Dae-jung Convention Center Exhibition Hall 2 will be built with a project cost of 112.5 billion KRW on a site of approximately 18,000㎡ at the first parking lot of the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Chipyeong-dong, consisting of two basement floors and four above-ground floors.
In December last year, the area around the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center was designated as the ‘Gwangju Urban Convergence Special Zone,’ and the area around Gwangju Station was selected as the Honam region’s largest startup complex, the ‘Urban Regeneration Innovation District National Pilot Zone.’ This is expected to contribute to revitalizing the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry linked with the region’s main industries.

Kim Jun-young, Director of the City’s Culture, Tourism, and Sports Office, said, “We will do our best to actively respond by guiding the construction site and consulting with related ministries during the remaining review stages to pass the final review within this year.” He added, “Once the second exhibition hall is completed in 2023, it will inject new vitality into the regional economy through the high value-added MICE industry.”
