Gwangju Police and Family Court Appoint 15 School Police Officers as 'Juvenile Custody Protection Committee Members'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency (Chief Kim Gyotae) announced on the 10th that it has consulted with the Gwangju Family Court and appointed 15 School Police Officers (SPO) from the Gwangju Police Agency as juvenile probation officers.
This appointment was promoted as a mutual cooperation measure between the Gwangju Family Court and the local community to prevent juvenile delinquency and provide guidance education for youth.
The appointed probation officers regularly meet and communicate with juveniles who have received the first type of disposition (custody entrusted to a guardian or a person who can protect the juvenile on behalf of the guardian) under Article 32, Paragraph 1 of the Juvenile Act, guiding them to adapt well at home and school.
This special appointment was prepared as part of the ‘2021 Crisis Youth Guidance and Protection Measures’ in cooperation with the local community, including the expansion of SPO probation officer designation by the Gwangju Police Agency, support for discovering and protecting out-of-school and out-of-home youth, and refinement of the post-management system for juvenile offenders linked to guidance programs.
Considering the high knowledge and meticulous work ability of the Gwangju Police Agency SPO, composed of professional personnel holding certifications such as psychological counselors, in the field of crisis youth guidance, the Family Court made a special appointment expecting excellent performance in probation officer activities.
The School Police Officers of the Gwangju Police Agency expressed great expectations for the selection of probation officers, saying, “It will not only help the healthy growth of youth but also greatly contribute to preventing juvenile crime in the local community.”
