Doosan Heavy Industries Transport Worker Dies After Being Crushed by 100t Heavy Part
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] An accident occurred in which a transportation company employee working at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction's nuclear power plant was crushed to death by a 100-ton heavy component.
According to the Changwon branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 10th, the accident happened around 9:40 a.m. on the 8th in Section 4 of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction's nuclear power plant located in Changwon, Gyeongnam.
The cargo truck driver A (45) from the transportation company inserted his upper body between the component and the trailer to move an anti-slip wooden plank, but the component shifted, causing the accident.
Mr. A was immediately transported to the hospital and underwent surgery but ultimately passed away 13 hours after the accident occurred.
The Changwon branch is investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, noting that communication between Mr. A, the signalman, and the crane operator was not smooth.
The Changwon branch has issued a work suspension order for Section 4 of the nuclear power plant where the accident occurred.
The Korean Metal Workers' Union stated that since this accident was caused by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction's inadequate safety management, a work suspension order should be issued for all workplaces.
At a press conference held in front of the Ministry of Employment and Labor's Changwon branch on the same day, the union said, "This accident would not have happened if Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction had properly confirmed whether there were people in the work area," and pointed out, "Safety rules existed only on paper, and it was not confirmed whether these were properly implemented during actual work."
They demanded, "The scope of work suspension should be expanded to all heavy material handling workplaces and thorough supervision must be conducted."
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction stated, "Although the accident occurred inside the company, it happened while a contracted transportation company was performing transportation work," expressing their view.
