Samsung Electronics Strengthens Galaxy A Series... Capturing Demand for Mid-Range and Budget Phones
'Galaxy Awesome Unpack' Online on the 17th
Unusual Move for Mid-Range Phone Unpack Event
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Samsung Electronics is taking an unusual step by holding an unpacking event for its flagship mid-range phones such as the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72, aiming to expand its market share (MS) in the mid-range smartphone market.
Samsung Electronics sent online invitations on the 10th to global media and partners for the Galaxy A series online unpacking event (Galaxy Awesome Unpack), scheduled for the 17th at 11 PM (10 AM Eastern Time, USA). In the invitation, Samsung explained, "We will unveil the latest Galaxy devices that provide an amazing Galaxy experience for everyone."
The main stars of this event are expected to be the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72. The Galaxy A52 (6.5-inch screen) and Galaxy A72 (6.7-inch screen) are anticipated to feature optical image stabilization (OIS), IP67-rated water and dust resistance, and a 90Hz refresh rate?features previously exclusive to flagship models. Both models will include a quad (4) camera setup with a 64-megapixel wide-angle main camera and an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Notably, the higher-end Galaxy A72 is expected to be the first in the Galaxy A series to feature up to 30x 'Space Zoom' camera functionality. Both models will support 5G and are expected to be released domestically within the second quarter. Prices are estimated to be in the 500,000 to 600,000 KRW range.
Industry experts interpret this as a sign of the rising status of mid-range phones. This is the first time Samsung Electronics has held an unpacking event specifically for the Galaxy A series. Previously, Samsung either held events under the name 'Galaxy A Event' or unveiled new products without any event.
As the global smartphone market saturates, the importance of the mid-range phone market has grown alongside premium devices. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung Electronics held a 19% share of the global smartphone market last year, ranking first, but lost the top spot to Apple in the fourth quarter. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and others are expanding their presence in Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia, replacing Huawei, necessitating aggressive responses.
