Statement Condemning the Myanmar Military Junta
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Chairman Kim Yong-jip) condemned the massacre of civilians by the Myanmar military junta on the 10th and urged the normalization of democracy.
All members of the Gwangju City Council stated in a press release that “the 1.5 million citizens of Gwangju are outraged by the massacre and bloody suppression of civilians by the Myanmar military junta happening in broad daylight,” and “we send a message of solidarity and support to the Myanmar people who are risking their lives on the front lines of democracy.”
They continued, “Democracy trampled by the military coup will surely be revived by the strong aspirations of the citizens,” adding, “The citizens of Gwangju, who have precious experience of opening democracy in South Korea by standing up against the guns and knives of the military dictatorship in May 1980, understand better than anyone the pain and noble value of the Myanmar people’s death-defying struggle.”
Chairman Kim Yong-jip emphasized, “We solemnly honor the courageous and righteous struggle of the Myanmar people toward a new era, and now the UN must actively intervene.”
