According to Uljin County on the 9th, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries designated the Dolmiyeok Ttebae harvesting method in the Uljin and Ulleung areas as the 9th National Important Fishery Heritage after document evaluation last October and recent field evaluation and hearing residents' opinions.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has been designating fishery heritages worthy of preservation among tangible and intangible fishery resources that have long been formed by adapting to the local environment, society, and customs as National Important Fishery Heritage. Starting with the designation of Jeju Haenyeo Fishery, Boseong Beolbae Fishery, and Namhae Jukbangnyeom Fishery in 2015, a total of eight fishery heritages have been designated so far.
The 'Uljin·Ulleung Dolmiyeok Ttebae Harvesting Fishery,' designated as a National Important Fishery Heritage this time, is a traditional fishing method in which a ttebae (raft) made by weaving logs such as paulownia wood is moved to the seaweed rock colony, and seaweed is harvested and transported. Uljin County designated Nagok 1, 3, and 6 villages as the target areas.
Accordingly, this fishing method will receive budget support necessary for the restoration and succession of fishery heritage for the next three years. Through this, Uljin County expects that it will contribute to revitalizing the local economy by preserving traditional fishing culture, increasing fishermen's income, attracting tourists, and enhancing the value of the local brand.
Jeon Chang-geol, the mayor of Uljin County, said, "This designation as a National Important Fishery Heritage is the result of continuous cooperation with Gyeongsangbuk-do and the relevant fishing villages since 2020 to discover materials," adding, "We will preserve this precious heritage and actively promote the excellence of Uljin Dolmiyeok."
