On the 8th (local time), The Wall Street Journal, citing Nielsen, a U.S. ratings agency, reported that the interview with Prince Harry and Duchess Markle attracted the largest audience among entertainment programs aired during prime time this year.
WSJ analyzed, "This shows that Americans still have a strong fascination with the British royal family."
The interview with Prince Harry and his wife was broadcast on CBS for two hours from 8 p.m. on the 7th, the prime time slot on U.S. television.
At the event, Markle made a bombshell statement as if determined, saying, "I even had suicidal thoughts while living in the British royal family."
Markle claimed that as a royal consort, she was not protected by the royal family and raised allegations of racial discrimination, saying the royal family did not want to accept her son Archie as a royal due to concerns about his "skin color." During this part, Oprah, who conducted the interview, asked back, "What did you say?"
Markle also revealed at the event that the gender of their currently pregnant second child is "a girl."
AP News reported, "This is the first royal baby to be born outside the UK in 100 years."
The fashion worn by Prince Harry and his wife during the broadcast also became a hot topic. Markle wore a black silk dress embroidered with white lotus flowers on the right side, known to be a Giorgio Armani product. The price is $4,700 (about 5.32 million KRW). U.S. media interpreted the lotus flower on the dress as meaning "the couple has been reborn as independent entities" and "definitely separated from the royal family." However, regarding the expensive brand worn, The New York Times (NYT) pointed out, "There is some contradiction in expressing the wearer's victimhood and 'recovering from pain'."
On the other hand, Prince Harry appeared in a gray suit from 'J.Crew Ludlow,' with the jacket priced at $425 (about 480,000 KRW) and the pants at $225 (about 250,000 KRW).
