[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The Busan Metropolitan City Autonomous Police Committee Recommendation Committee for the implementation of the autonomous police system will be launched on the 8th.
Busan Metropolitan City (Acting Mayor Lee Byung-jin) announced that at 4 p.m. on the same day, it will appoint members of the Busan Metropolitan City Autonomous Police Committee 'Committee Recommendation Committee' at the city hall meeting room and hold its first meeting.
The committee is composed of five members, including local academics and legal professionals from Busan, as well as the head of Busan City's Planning and Coordination Office.
The committee is a consultative body that includes four members recommended by the chairpersons' council of districts and counties, the council of district mayors and county governors, the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, and the Chief Judge of the Busan District Court, who are the recommenders defined by law, as well as the ex officio head of Busan City's Planning and Coordination Office. It will recommend two members to the Autonomous Police Committee.
The meeting will be held privately in accordance with relevant regulations. At the upcoming second meeting, each recommending member will submit candidate nominees, and thorough evaluations regarding the qualifications and suitability of the candidates will be conducted.
At the third meeting, scheduled around April to May, two final members will be selected and recommended as autonomous police committee members.
Since January, the city has established an Autonomous Police Preparation Task Force and is conducting smooth consultations on important preparation matters such as the scope of autonomous police duties and the organization of the autonomous police office with the Autonomous Police Working Group set up at the Busan Police Agency. The city is also gathering diverse opinions from an expert advisory group composed of the city council, local academia, legal circles, media, and civic organizations.
Currently, the city is in the process of legislative notification for the ▲‘Ordinance on Busan Metropolitan City Autonomous Police Affairs and the Organization and Operation of the Autonomous Police Committee (Draft)’ for the implementation of the autonomous police system, and ▲active consultations are underway with related departments for the amendment of the ‘Ordinance on the Organization and Staffing of Busan Metropolitan City Administrative Agencies’ related to the organization of the Autonomous Police Committee.

Acting Mayor Lee Byung-jin said, “Preparations for the implementation of the autonomous police system, including the establishment of autonomous regulations, the composition of the committee, the installation of the secretariat, and securing office space, are progressing smoothly. We will continue to identify issues during the pilot operation period and prepare thoroughly for the official launch on July 1.”
