Gwangju City Promotes Green Remodeling of Aging Public Rental Housing
Expanding Units from 26㎡ to 52㎡ to Supply Multi-Child Families and Newlyweds
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 5th that it has applied for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s “Aged Public Rental Housing Green Remodeling” contest project to improve the quality of life for permanent rental housing residents and realize a carbon-neutral city by 2045.
The aged public rental housing green remodeling project involves installing high-performance windows, light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and water-saving faucets in permanent housing that is over 15 years old to enhance energy efficiency and improve the living environment for vulnerable groups.
Green remodeling is implemented by dividing it into single-unit remodeling and unit integration remodeling. Single-unit remodeling involves a full renovation of a single unit to supply to single-person households and housing-vulnerable groups, while unit integration remodeling combines two small units (26㎡ each) into one expanded unit (52㎡) to supply to multi-child families and newlyweds.
Currently, Gwangju manages 15,370 permanent rental housing units (4,700 units by Gwangju Urban Corporation, 10,670 units by LH), of which 13,920 units (90.6%) are aged housing over 25 years old.
In 2019, the city implemented the nation’s first “unit wall demolition project” at Usanbit Yeoulchae, which can be considered the predecessor of the green remodeling project’s “integrated unit remodeling.” After this project, the remaining units will be applied for annually to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
