At around 5:50 p.m. that day, when Yoon left the front entrance of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, prosecutors and staff members saw him off on his last commute. The employees had been waiting for Yoon in the first-floor lobby and entrance of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office building for about an hour.
At this moment, Yoon said, "I am grateful to everyone who helped and supported me in leading and working at the prosecution in this building," adding, "I regret not being able to complete my term and leaving early, but I ask for your understanding that it was an unavoidable choice."
After shaking hands with the staff, Yoon accepted a bouquet of flowers and left the Supreme Prosecutors' Office building.
When asked by reporters about his reflections on ending his 27-year career as a prosecutor, Yoon said, "Although there were many shortcomings, I believe I worked without regrets thanks to the help of many people."
Earlier that morning, reports surfaced about Yoon's resignation amid strong opposition to the ruling party's push to establish the Serious Crime Investigation Office (Jungsucheong). Yoon took a half-day off in the morning and returned to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office building at 2 p.m.
On his way to work, Yoon said, "I intend to resign as Prosecutor General today," and delivered a prepared farewell speech for about one minute in front of reporters.
