Professor Park Hyung-jun of Dong-A University, the People Power Party's candidate for Busan mayor, has been confirmed as the overwhelming number one, preparing for a showdown with the Democratic Party of Korea.
Since declaring his candidacy last December, the 'Park Hyung-jun momentum theory,' which has maintained an unshakable first place in various suitability polls for Busan mayor, is gaining traction.
In this poll as well, he won a landslide victory over his competitors, former Busan Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Park Sung-hoon and former lawmaker Lee Eon-ju, passing the primary election without hesitation.
The People Power Party announced the final candidate for the Busan mayoral by-election at 9 a.m. at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul.
In the primary vote conducted on the 2nd and 3rd through a 100% general citizen opinion poll, candidate Park recorded a final vote rate of 54.4%, overwhelmingly defeating former Busan Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Park Sung-hoon (28.63%) and former lawmaker Lee Eon-ju (21.54%).
Former Deputy Mayor Park and former lawmaker Lee each received a 10% bonus for being newcomers and women, but the momentum was unaffected.
Professor Park endured all-out attacks from the ruling party, which raised suspicions of his involvement in illegal surveillance by the National Intelligence Service, as well as negative campaigns within his party, but overcame them all.
He also won all four TV debates, which were decided by party member votes.
Candidate Park targeted the Democratic Party, saying, "This election is being held as the most shameful event in the history of Korean politics," and added, "The people must show that justice is alive. We must not forget why this election is being held."
He also said, "During the four years of the Moon Jae-in administration, I have deeply felt on the ground how disappointed and angry the people are at the runaway government. This election must be one that puts a brake on the government's recklessness."
In his acceptance speech, candidate Park stated, "I will show that we are a party with alternatives and a party that can present a true vision. Starting from Busan, I will set an example of how true leadership innovation and democratic leadership in Korea can be created."
Born in 1959 in Choryang-dong, Dong-gu, Busan, he participated in student movements while attending Korea University. After working as a reporter for JoongAng Ilbo, he served as a professor at Dong-A University. While engaging in civic movements at the Busan Economic Justice Network, he frequently appeared in broadcasts and newspapers.
In the mid-1990s, he entered politics as a member of the advisory team for former President Kim Young-sam (YS). He was elected in 2004 as a member of the Grand National Party and was classified as part of the MB faction. In the 2008 election, during the 'pro-Park Geun-hye' wave, he lost to former lawmaker Ryu Jae-jung, who ran as an independent.
