[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang City (Mayor Jeong Hyeon-bok) announced on the 2nd that it will operate an urban forest experience program at the Madong Reservoir Ecological Park Visitor Center until December.

This program is held annually to provide an opportunity to feel the nature of the urban ecological forest, experience making crafts using natural materials to stimulate emotions, and realize and learn the importance of nature.

The program is tailored for participants such as elementary school students and younger, teenagers, and adults, and consists of forest exploration and various crafts at four locations: the Hyeonchungtap Trail, Gayasan, Wau Ecological Lake Park, and Madong Reservoir Ecological Forest.

During the forest exploration, participants learn about the value and functions of the forest through lectures by forest interpreters on topics such as observing forest friends, photosynthesis of plants, the process of forest changes, reasons for autumn leaves, how plants survive winter, and the daily life of insects.

The five-sense crafts include seasonal and themed activities using natural materials such as tasting seasonal flowers, making leaf crowns, creating insect and forest scent pouches, making pinecone bracelets and necklaces, and making Hwajeon (flower pancakes).

The forest experience program is free for all Gwangyang citizens and is conducted on weekdays starting around 2 p.m. for a 90-minute session.

Those who wish to participate must make a reservation in advance, and applications can be made at the Gwangyang City Parks Department or the Madong Reservoir Ecological Park Visitor Center.

Jung Sang-beom, Director of the Parks Department, said, “I hope this will be an opportunity for citizens exhausted by COVID-19 to heal through communion with nature,” and added, “We will strive further to develop programs for citizen rest and healing.”
