Aung San Suu Kyi Faces Possible Maximum 9-Year Sentence... Will She Be Prosecuted Again?
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Myanmar military government has added new criminal charges against State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, allowing for a maximum prison sentence of 9 years. This move aims to block Suu Kyi's political comeback for an extended period.
According to local media on the 2nd, the Myanmar military government filed additional charges against Suu Kyi for incitement and violations of the Telecommunications Law during the second trial held via video conference the previous day.
Previously, the military government charged Suu Kyi with possession and use of illegally imported walkie-talkies (violation of import-export laws) and violating COVID-19 prevention regulations during last November's general election (violation of the Natural Disaster Law). If all charges are found guilty, Suu Kyi could face up to 9 years in prison.
The military government is expected to continue prosecuting Suu Kyi. It has announced an investigation into money laundering suspicions involving the foundation operated by Suu Kyi. Recently, the military raided the foundation's Yangon office, seizing computers, financial records, and bankbooks, and detained two foundation executives.
