‘Suyuri Patriotic Martyrs and Liberation Army Cemetery’ Now Managed by the State
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter]The joint burial sites of patriotic martyrs and the Liberation Army in Suyu-ri, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, and the joint burial site of war veterans in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province have been designated as nationally managed cemeteries.
On the 25th, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced that these cemeteries are the first cases designated as nationally managed cemeteries after consultations with the respective local governments and bereaved families.
Accordingly, the Suyu-ri patriotic martyrs' cemetery will be renamed 'Seoul Suyu Nationally Managed Cemetery,' and the Anseong war veterans' joint cemetery will be renamed 'Anseong Sagok Nationally Managed Cemetery.' This is a measure taken in accordance with the revised and enforced "Act on the Establishment and Operation of National Cemeteries" amended last year. The Ministry plans to assign dedicated staff to these cemeteries and install signboards and convenience facilities to manage them at a level equivalent to national cemeteries.
The Suyu-ri cemetery in Seoul is the resting place of 32 independence patriots, including Kim Chang-suk, Son Byung-hee, Shin Ik-hee, Yeo Un-hyung, Lee Si-young, and Lee Jun (all awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation). The Anseong cemetery is the resting place of 58 veterans who participated in the Korean War (6.25).
