SKB Launches Yeoju Satellite Center Powered 100% by Eco-Friendly Electricity
[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Cho] SK Broadband's Yeoju Satellite Center is transforming into a workplace that uses '100% eco-friendly' electricity starting this year.
SK Broadband announced on the 25th that it has participated in Korea Electric Power Corporation's (KEPCO) renewable energy electricity purchase program, 'Green Premium,' and finalized the contract.
The Green Premium is a system where electricity consumers (companies) pay an additional fee (premium) to be recognized for using electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, and receive a 'Renewable Energy Usage Certificate.' The premiums paid by companies are used to promote and expand renewable energy. This system has been implemented since this year to activate renewable energy usage.
Under this contract, the renewable energy electricity purchased from KEPCO amounts to 615 MWh annually. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 150 households (based on a family of four). SK Broadband plans to use all of this electricity to operate the Yeoju Satellite Center, converting it into a 100% eco-friendly energy workplace.
Starting with this contract, SK Broadband will also actively pursue the implementation of 'RE100.' SK Broadband, which is promoting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, applied for RE100 membership for the first time in Korea last November along with seven SK Group affiliates.
Meanwhile, within the 149,000㎡ (approximately 45,000 pyeong) Yeoju Satellite Center, SK Broadband is establishing a deep space ground station antenna system for space communication with the lunar orbiter being developed by the government, which aims for launch in early August 2022. In December of last year, the installation of the largest antenna reflector in Korea, with a diameter of 35 meters, was also completed.
