January Domestic Population Movement Down 2.2% YoY... Population Inflow Up in Gyeonggi and Sejong
Statistics Korea to Release 'January 2021 Domestic Population Movement Statistics' on the 23rd
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The number of movers in January was 633,000, showing a 2.2% (14,000 people) decrease compared to the same month last year.
Statistics Korea announced this information on the 23rd through the 'January 2021 Domestic Population Movement Statistics.'
Among the total movers, 64.7% moved within the same province, while 35.3% moved between provinces. Compared to the same month last year, intra-provincial moves decreased by 1.4%, and inter-provincial moves decreased by 3.6%.
The population movement rate, which is the number of movers per 100 people, was 14.5%, a decrease of 0.4 percentage points compared to the same month last year.
By province, net migration (inflow minus outflow) showed net inflows in Gyeonggi (21,144 people) and Sejong (1,822 people). On the other hand, 15 provinces including Seoul (-10,440 people), Daegu (-2,139 people), Daejeon (-2,139 people), and Busan (-1,772 people) experienced net outflows.

Net migration rates by province showed net inflows in Sejong (6.0%) and Gyeonggi (1.9%), and net outflows in Seoul (-1.3%), Daegu (-1.0%), and Gwangju (-0.8%).
