[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Bukchon Cultural Center announced on the 22nd that it will operate a non-face-to-face program called ‘Daljip Burning Experience’ as part of the ‘Gye-dong Madam’s House Jeongwol Daeboreum Celebration’ event to celebrate Jeongwol Daeboreum.
On Jeongwol Daeboreum, various traditional seasonal customs such as burning the daljip (moon house), cracking nuts, and jisinbalgi (stepping on the earth god) were enjoyed to ward off misfortune and pray for abundance and blessings throughout the year. Among these, daljip burning was one of the most widely practiced customs, where a pile of wood was stacked to build a daljip and burned as a purification ritual, wishing for a bright year free from disease and worries.
To experience the Jeongwol Daeboreum seasonal customs, Bukchon Cultural Center will send out ‘Daljip Burning Experience Kits’ to drive away misfortune and pray for abundance in the new year. This experience kit was produced in collaboration with a hanok candle workshop in Bukchon.
Applications for the experience kit are accepted through the Seoul Hanok Portal website and Bukchon Cultural Center’s social media until the 23rd, and 100 applicants will be selected by lottery to receive the kit by mail. Inquiries can be made to Bukchon Cultural Center.
Meanwhile, as social distancing measures have been eased to level 2, on-site and face-to-face programs at Seoul’s public hanoks will gradually resume under capacity restrictions. At Bukchon Cultural Center, visitors on the 26th and 27th, the days of Jeongwol Daeboreum, can enjoy free and guided tours and also experience traditional games such as neolttwigi (Korean seesaw) and tuho (arrow throwing). Since the schedule and content of on-site program resumptions vary by public hanok, it is necessary to check individually with the facility you wish to visit or participate in.
