On the 17th, the petitioner said, "My wife was discharged after delivering our child by cesarean section at a university hospital, but later her face and entire body swelled up, so we returned to the same hospital," adding, "At that time, she was initially diagnosed with blood cancer at the hospital."
The petitioner explained, "From May 2020, my wife received the first and second rounds of chemotherapy injections, but there was little improvement. However, Professor A, a famous professor at the university hospital, recommended a new anticancer drug injection, saying her condition was improving."
He continued, "Professor A administered the new anticancer drug injection costing 6 million won per session twice and said, 'Since her condition has slightly improved, let's continue chemotherapy with this expensive injection.' After that, she received chemotherapy two more times," adding, "However, my wife's weight dropped to 37 kg, and she was unable to walk properly."
He further stated, "Her condition continued to worsen, and eventually, at the end of October 2020, she visited the hematology department of another hospital for consultation," and "A professor at the other hospital diagnosed her not with blood cancer but with chronic active EB virus infection and cytomegalovirus."
He added, "The professors said my wife came in a very poor condition, and due to the previous chemotherapy or other reasons, her entire immune system was compromised, so there was no treatment method," and "My wife passed away in the hospital on January 14, 2021, without even properly holding our child."
In response, Chung-Ang University Hospital released a statement on the 20th, saying, "Our medical staff clearly diagnosed 'malignant lymphoma (blood cancer)' according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification through accurate tests," and "We provided normal medical care and treatment following standard clinical guidelines."
The hospital stated, "Throughout the treatment period, our medical staff administered only drug combinations approved for use by the National Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service," and "The expensive drug used last was not a clinical trial drug but an approved anticancer treatment for the lymphoma."
They added, "Although the drug was expensive, we explained to the family and guardians that treatment could still be expected and administered the drug with prior consent."
On the 17th, the petitioner lamented, "My wife was diagnosed with cancer when she did not have it, and her body could not tolerate the new anticancer treatment, leaving her devastated and unable to receive proper virus treatment before she passed away."
