US Child Accidentally Fires Pistol, Tragic Incident Involving Mother
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] In the United States, a tragic incident occurred where a young child accidentally fired a handgun inside a handbag, resulting in the death of the mother.
According to CNN and Fox News in the U.S. on the 18th (local time), Gabrielle Alexis Henderson (25), a mother of five children, was found shot dead at a home in Cornelius, North Carolina, around 7 p.m. on the 15th. Henderson's youngest child was also injured by gunfire and was taken to the hospital, but their life is not believed to be in critical condition.
It was confirmed that no outsiders were present in the house besides Henderson and her five children. At the time of the accident, four of the children were in the same room as their mother, while the eldest child was in the living room. Police found a small semi-automatic handgun in the mother’s handbag and stated that it appears one of the children accidentally fired the weapon while handling it.
Details have not been disclosed due to privacy concerns, but netizens who saw the report expressed sorrow, noting that the mother was young, the eldest child was likely no older than 6 or 7 years old, and the other children were very young as well. They also emphasized that firearms must be stored out of reach of young children and must always have safety locks engaged.
According to a nationwide survey conducted in 2015, 13 million households in the U.S. owned firearms, and that same year, 14,000 minors were treated for gunshot wounds. The number of minors who died from gunshot wounds reached 2,800, with 782 of those deaths analyzed to have resulted from firearms that were not properly secured with safety locks.
A Gallup poll conducted from September 30 to October 15 last year surveyed 1,035 adults aged 18 and older and found that 44% of Americans (with a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of ±5%) owned firearms.
