Gangnam-gu Challenges Zero Defective Manholes... 37,268 Units Inspected and Maintained
100 Manholes with 'Ra' Grade Scheduled for Maintenance from March to November... Establishment of a Digital Management Ledger with Manhole Types and Inspection Dates
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun) will conduct a comprehensive inspection of all 37,268 manholes from next month until November to repair defective manholes that cause inconvenience to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
The district plans to measure the internal and external conditions of the manholes and assign a systematic maintenance plan by categorizing them into four safety grades from ‘Ga’ to ‘Ra’ based on functionality and degree of aging.
The main inspection items include ▲visible cracks, damage, or detachment of the cover ▲surface wear condition ▲bumpiness when vehicles or pedestrians pass ▲height difference between the cover and frame ▲height difference between the cover and surrounding pavement.
The district aims to prioritize repairs starting with the ‘Ra’ grade manholes that require immediate action based on detailed inspection results, targeting a total of 100 manholes for repair. After inspection, information such as manhole type and inspection date will be computerized to establish a manhole management ledger.
If manholes protruding or sinking on the road surface are left unattended, they cause noise and vibration due to vehicle impact and also spoil the urban aesthetics. To minimize this, the district repaired about 1,000 manholes over the past 10 years, including 82 defective manholes last year.

Lee Han-gyu, head of the Road Management Division, said, “We will thoroughly inspect to ensure that all manholes in the area are safely managed without exception,” adding, “Through this comprehensive maintenance, we will create pedestrian-friendly streets and a pleasant road environment together with residents, further enhancing the road quality of ‘Pumgyeok City, Gangnam.’”
