This bill has been pending in the relevant standing committee's subcommittee due to opposition from the opposition party since it was proposed by Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Shin Jeong-hoon in October last year.
Lee Min-jun, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea and representative of Naju 1, who led the announcement of the statement, said, "The Korea Energy Technology University Act embodies the government's national agenda to foster the energy new industry as a national future strategic industry and the will of the people who wish for balanced national development."
He continued, "To lead the energy new industry, which is expected to become a 3 quadrillion won market, South Korea must close the technology gap with advanced countries," adding, "A university that nurtures talents necessary for fostering the energy new industry through challenging research and innovative education is essential."
He also pointed out, "The disappointment of Jeollanam-do council members toward the opposition party, which opposes the establishment of Korea Energy Technology University simply as a regional project, is beyond words," and emphasized, "The perspective that views Korea Energy Technology University merely as one of the specialized universities for the region must change."
He urged, "If this bill is not passed in the February extraordinary session of the National Assembly, the scheduled opening next year will be delayed, and the technology gap with advanced countries will widen accordingly," and called for "active cooperation from the opposition party to ensure the bill's enactment."
